A Wildlife Experience

It was time for a road trip again. We are always exploring different destinations and activities in order to give you first hand knowledge of what to expect during your holiday in the Garden Route.

Our latest road trip took us to The Garden Route Game Reserve near the town of Albertinia.

Our journey started in the village of Wilderness in the heart of the Garden Route, traveling on the N2 past George towards Mossel Bay. A mere 100km and we arrived at the entrance of the Garden Route Game Reserve.

Before even getting to reception, we already had several animal sightings. At reception we were welcomed by very friendly staff, and offered a welcome drink.

Before checking in to our rooms, we decided to relax on the deck overlooking the Game Reserve and taking in the absolute beauty of unspoilt nature.

The rooms - we were left speechless with the complete attention to detail in the design and layout of the accommodation. We were booked into the extremely comfortable lodge rooms overlooking the swimming pool and the game reserve. The chalets are elevated, each with a unique view of the reserve.

At 4pm it was time for our first game drive, and what an experience, within an hour we had seen the "big five" - our first sighting was that of the ever elusive cheetah - what a way to start a game drive.

After the game drive the guests have an opportunity to gather around the boma around a bon fire while sharing stories of the sightings.

Dinner is served from 7pm, and offers food for every taste, with traditional bobotie, Kudu steak, ostrich steak, salads, pickled fish and many more dishes. Whether you are a vegetarian or meat lover, you are guaranteed to have a feast.

After dinner we gathered at the "Bush Bar" for after dinner drinks while sharing more amazing animal stories.

Back in the room for a hot shower and a good night's rest in preparation of our next game drive in the morning. The rooms are equipped with air conditioners, satellite television, Wi-Fi, a well-stocked mini bar, DVD player, micro wave oven and all the luxuries required for a comfortable stay, without taking anything away from the wildlife experience.

Our morning game drive was another fantastic experience, taking us within meters of the elephants, five lions, rhino and the highlight for myself, giraffe walking right next to our vehicle.

Breakfast at the reserve is an absolute feast with so many choices it is difficult to make up one's mind. After breakfast and checking out we stopped at the reptile enclosure where we took a guided tour of the variety of snakes, lizards, crocodiles on tortoises. We even had the opportunity to handle a live snake.

For a family holiday, weekend break-away or romantic getaway, Garden Route Game Lodge definitely qualifies as a Wild Info Top Destination.

Garden Route Game Lodge is ideal for team-building and wedding functions.
